Advertisement analysis – Gorillaz – Plastic beach
Advertisement analysis – Gorillaz – Plastic beach
This advertisement features a large image, the bottom half being water and has the title ‘Gorillaz Plastic Beach’ in large white writing in the bottom left portion of the image in the font that Gorillaz usually use for their titles. Working our eyes up the image there is a reflection in the water that stretches right to the bottom of the image telling us it is either a very large object or that it is either sunrise or sunset. It is an island that stretches from the left side of the image to the right. With analysis we can see the island is flat in shape but in the middle there is a large piece of rock that has two visible cliffs either end. On top of the large part of the island is a big white building that is a little bit smaller than the cliff that it’s sat on. It is also clear when closely observed that the island and everything on and around it is made of plastic except for the water, which is obviously homage to the title. Between the left border of the image and the island there is a pirate ship and a very old looking plane and between the right border of the image and the island there is a submarine and a boat. Small plastic ships and planes are often used as toys by children who seem to escape to another world when they play with them. This could suggest that the artist feels trapped and that the place he is trapped in is fake which would explain the plastic island. The toy ships and planes could represent a way of escaping this small fake place, but the ways of escaping are also false and never last forever. The only form of life on the island appears to be the trees that grow on both the lower and higher edges of the island. However even these trees are plastic which could depict the way the artist feels about other people and shows that the artist feels alone as there is no other people on the island and any form of life is fake anyway. There is a small fairground on the lower part of the island that amplifies the feeling of loneliness in the image; the artist has many things to share but no one to share them with. There is a form of light which looks like a small lighthouse which could suggest the desperation felt by the artist as this is a way to get the attention of anyone that could join them on this fake lonely island. The house on the higher level of the beach has part of it’s building surrounding trees which could represent claustrophobia that the artist feels when under pressure. The building isn’t an ordinary shape which could depict instability and the bright white colour could once again represent the artist’s desperation for the attention of someone off the island. The size of the house also amplifies loneliness in the image as something that large with no-one to accommodate it could represent the artists loneliness for making so much money and buying so many things then not having anyone to share them with.
